Martin Summers will be exhibiting artwork titled: "LeProcope_Glitch02" as part of the "Expanding Fields" exhibition organized by the Lexington Art League and curated by Catherine Wentworth. The exhibition opens Friday, February 24th from 6-9pm at the Loudoun House - 209 Castlewood Drive, Lexington, KY 40505.
The image is a combination of an original digital photograph taken during dinner one night in Paris, France in October, 2008. The reflections of the interior of the restaurant “Le Procope” and the life of the street collapsed into the glass picture plane of the window. The photo was later combined with an architectural rendering of an experimental house project testing ideas of glitch and camouflage as a means of obfuscating the primacy of formal legibility. After a few experiments with this as a composition, the image was now a "found object," new and no longer referential to its origin or meaning. After refiguring the image through several glitch filters, the final expression is free of its relationship to its origins, and is brand new, understood now only as a result of its process, the process of becoming.
The artwork is an extension of architectural research into glitch and camouflage, a means of visually disrupting the architectural formal coherence with a new type of pattern coherence and disruption, dissolving solid figures and producing perceptual ones. The artwork has a life beyond the print and is productive as a new "pattern" that can return to the architectural experiment.

Lexington, KY - The Lexington Art League is proud to announce the upcoming Fourth Friday Opening of “Expanding Fields” on Friday, February 24th from 6-9pm at the Loudoun House. This exhibition lends a fresh perspective to essential architectural elements and highlights its ability to crossover successfully into the art world. Curated by Catherine Wentworth, “Expanding Fields” aims not only to construct a new context for these elements, but also to highlight their influence in intricate and colorful pieces of all mediums that can be enjoyed by the art and architectural community alike. "This exhibition places many architects from the central Kentucky area in conversation with others working nationally and internationally. They are working with media ranging from collage to computer code in order to confront, on a smaller scale, some of the same questions we all face as inhabitants of the contemporary built environment. Viewers will be able to interact with some of the works directly, whether by inhabiting an inflatable structure or by sending text messages to an installation." Said, Wentworth.
“Expanding Fields ” represents the continuation of a recent effort at LAL to provide opportunities for guest curators and artist collectives to present major exhibitions within the Loudoun House Galleries. Speaking of this new approach to programming, Stephanie Harris, LAL’s Executive Director said, “LAL has long been know for celebrating innovative approaches to art-making and supporting artists directly through opportunities to exhibit their work within our glorious exhibition space. By accepting proposals from curators and artist collectives, we continue to broaden our base of support not only for artists, but also for talented the curator’s within our community and region. This is an important step for LAL as
we continue to deepen our commitment to inclusivity and to support diversity of thought and
content through our work”.
This Fourth Friday exhibition will feature music by Joseph Porter Clark of Acoustic Division and catering by Sweet Lilu’s . There will be a special reception with comments allowing guests to inquire about and discuss the exhibition with the curator herself. Fourth Friday is presented in partnership with generous support from Woodford Reserve and Original Makers Club .
Admission is free to all LAL members and is $5 for non-members. As always, students with valid college ID get in free!
