Project Description:

Improbable Object[space-s] +

The Truth[s] of the False Positives

Poster series 1 and 2 were a direct response to the invitation by #superarchitects and relied heavily on individual, ongoing research.  Though created separately, series 1 and 2 were influenced by discussions in real-time, across 3 time zones via frequently glitchy digital communication. Series 3 began much like the formation and development of a thesis project, unknowable but anticipating an exciting result, tested through rigorous development.  Together we focused on collaborative expression aware that our workflow would also be a space of experimentation. We reveled in and exploited that unknowable space for its creative capacity. Existing digital models were rebuilt in common software and techniques/processes shared. Protocols formed for data exchange including file-naming conventions, folder structures, and cloud-based storage.  This allowed the team to focus on the "what", as opposed to the "how."  Initially, Bryan developed a beginning response to series 1 and 2 in 2d + 2D projection, while Marty and Owen developed a combined 3d digital model, using models from each time zone to produce 2d and 3d offspring. The transfer and translation of resources gave the drawing a life of its own.

Rules were established to structure the “live” files exchange and its phases of ownership.  One time zone would work for a day or two (with screen shared moments of coordination) then the other.  This back and forth sequence structured the drawing’s evolution as a call and response process, giving space for individual reaction to new stimuli, chance, error, alignments, and misreading. Experimentation outside the live file is inserted, tested, and evaluated as another stimuli requiring a synthesizing reaction - a productive misinterpretation.  At each point, new ideas formed through conversations (verbal and drawing) continually pushing the project towards new and unanticipated results.

Series 3, as with 1 and 2, is not an end unto itself, but a moment within an evolving process of discovery that reveals the joy evident in its creation.  Series 3 is now beginning a transition back into 3d space, the foundation of a new experiment. Discussions regarding the development of possible Series 4, 5, and beyond have emerged from in-depth conversations between the two factions and #superarchitects. Hold on tight…this is just the beginning!

The following text is from the post to Instagram on Super//Architects, written by Martin Summers and Bryan Cantley, Edited by Owen Duross:

Improbable Object[space-s] +

When #superarchitects requested our participation, we were all unaware of the serendipitous potential [unknown path projection].  In our initial discussions, we revealed that S//A unknowingly entered an ongoing conversation about design, process, methodology and representation; which originally formed via social media. Poster series 3 is evolving with this conversation. Exchanging thoughts, critiques, data, and techniques, individual and common interests are explored in a call and response process. Through this rich collaborative experience, third and fourth generation offspring emerge.
