Concept

The house is conceived as a series of linear bars that blur program and landscape, inside and outside, site and architecture. It uses the natural topography to create sectional variations for a more dynamic spatial experience and access to views while minimizing stairs to allow for slopes and ramps for accessibility to its aging inhabitants. When one looks across the grain, the house reveals another set of voids that link inside and outside, and frame an internalized, domestic landscape where site and house become one.

The property has several existing houses that have contained multiple generations of the family. As the owners have aged, they have considered selling or leasing parts of the property that are adjacent to the main roads in the valley to move up the small mountain away from the development and to where the house can maximize views of the beautiful Appalachian terrain. The house is meant to be a place where the entire family can come together and enjoy the place that they have called home for over sixty years.
